I had a friend had a 70 340 duster that beat up 396 s all day long.

I have a '70 GSX. It is not a trailer queen and I am not backing down from anyone. I love to run Hemi cars and LS-6 cars.

My family had several AMC's good running cars.

If those were completely stock I suspect the chevell was geard too high. Anything over a 373 rear gear in a big block was too much. Your torque is all at the lower rpm and even your hp is out of breath before you reach the 1/4 mile. I'm sure I'll get dozens of people swear I'm wrong but I found this out the expensive way so before you tell me I'm wrong, spend the money and prove it. It's a little different now days because you can get the right cam, heads and better lower end components to strech the torque and hp out further into the rpm range

I have drove both cars , not these but the same and this chevelle did not run correctly. The chevelle should blow the buick off the road, most likely the chevelle didn't have the timing set correctly. That ls6 is a honest 515hp engine and will run 12.20 at 112 if everything is tuned properly . It might of had a ls6 copy cam and they are close but the lobe separation is usually wrong. Possibly the person driving the chevelle wasn't shifting it manually, it needs to be shifted at 6500.

Kind of a shame to risk these treasures on the quarter mile.

The og stock 426 was 425hp stock this is todays 426 hemi modded ffs lol and nothing mopar about modern dodge its srt mopar is more parts dodge’s performance parts division which has been dead for over 40yrs it used to be srt….. srt is modren dodge mopar is for the og cars

The Buick engine was a thin wall cast. It was just slightly heavier than the Chevy small block of the day. Big weight advantage.

In the late 70s and early 80s my dad had a used car lot. A young man come in with a beautiful 70 Buick GS stage 1. He wanted to trade even up for a Mustang ll. My dad wouldn't do it. If only we knew what the future held.

I was lucky enough to own a 70 350 body with a transplanted GSX 455 S1 drivetrain at 17. AFTER, owning a 71 Chevelle SS with a transplanted 305 (blown motor) at 16. I wish I would've hung on to both cars, (or at least combined them into one car😉). But I Never lost a race in that Buick. I lost a lot of money in parts (that engine could destroy anything birds to it back then). I had lots of fun

I wouldn't consider a 61 Catalina as a Land Yacht. It's about the same weight as the Formula or your average Chevelle SS.

Kinda cool. But i think the chevy could have won by taking up the rpms to about 7000 when coming out of 1st. Either way losing by a fender is respectable.

A cool retro build would be getting a 64-67 429cid ,finding a 59-60' Eldo 345hp tri-power intake ,full length headers and moderate cam ,mod the carbs,MSD ign box and dist. and it could be made to look pretty close to original under the hood. Estimating 400hp@4800rpm/ 500lbtq@3400rpm. Tasty...!😉

A mildly supercharged Caddy 500cid wouldve made about 650hp @ 5,500rpm and 730lbtq@ 4,000rpm and blow both of those runt-rides off the road. BIGBEATSALL!

I'm pretty sure the exhaust on either car is stock, which is fine. I put a Rochester 4bl carb on my 1970 Buick Skylark 350 and I could smoke them all, mainly because I need new rings.

A 69 or 70 340 dart would have been a more even race. Compression, horsepower and torque.

Most people don't know Chevrolet, Buick and Oldsmobile each developed and produced their own engines.

Had a 1970 Stage-1 convertible, would scratch 3rd at the quarter mile.

My Dad's 1970 GTO w/455, stock but ordered with lots of options ran 10's (10.3 best e.t.) at Pomona. Only the red white and blue AMC's amx w/390 and rebel machine w/401 could compete ( he called them "f-ing clown cars"). My Grandpa used to say "it will pass anything, but the gas station". 😎

I had a 68 SS 396 375HP rated 425HP in a Corvette...Only vehicle I had problems running with were the 66 SS Novas with the 327 350HP...Those ran well once the wheel hop was controlled. Beyond 67 the Goats felt a little Boatish.

I had a 66 GTO that turned 13:28 104 and a 66 olds 442 was a car length behind me and passed me before the lights like I had popped a drag shoot! Got to hand it to him, he had a great car. Gold and ran out of Petersburg Va. in 1966.🦇
